There was consternation in several quarters in Abuja and beyond over the weekend as rumours circulated that President Muhammadu Buhari had passed on at a London hospital where he was said to be receiving treatment.

As the day wore on, the rumours gained ground after a news website published a story that the President was dead. The rumour soon spread like wild fire in different parts of the country with many Nigerians making frantic phone calls to ascertain the story’s accuracy.

The presidency however said on Saturday that there was no truth in the news.

Buhari had on Thursday travelled to London, United Kingdom, after writing to the National Assembly that he would be proceeding on a vacation and that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo would be performing the duties of the President while he was away.

“The report is hogwash,” the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, simply said when our correspondent contacted him.

Adesina also denied the report on his Twitter handle, praying for those behind it to repent.

“Best wishes to all who wish PMB well. As for those who carry evil rumours, may they receive grace to repent,” he said.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, also took to his Twitter handle to deny the report.

Shehu wrote, “He is alive and well. President Buhari is not magical. He cannot be holidaying in the UK and be in Germany, dead or alive at the same time.

“He is unlike a past president, who was at Ota with Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and attending the Trump inauguration in DC, being in two places at the same time.”

Shortly after the rumor began to spread on Saturday, our correspondent observed that    the President’s family members were unperturbed in Aso Rock.

A member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Saidu Sani-Fago, who represents Daura/Mai’Adua/Sandamu Federal Constituency of Katsina State also dismissed worries over Buhari’s health status, saying that the President was fit.”

The lawmaker spoke further, “Mr. President is fit and sound. He is taking a 10-day vacation and he wants to seize the opportunity to see his doctors.

“This is normal. He did it last year.”

Similarly, pan-northern socio-political organisation, the Arewa Consultative Forum, said President Buhari is a mortal like every other Nigerian and liable to fall ill.

According to the National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Muhammadu Ibrahim, there  is nothing wrong if the President falls ill.

The ACF spokesman said, “President Muhammadu Buhari is human. He has taken his annual leave and travelled to the United Kingdom for medical check up. ACF wishes him well. ACF calls on Nigerians to support the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.”

In the same vein, the Muslim Rights Concern has advised Nigerians not to panic. Responding to an inquiry by SUNDAY PUNCH, the MURIC Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, stated it was natural to feel concerned about the President’s health.

“But that is nothing to worry about. Many at his age cannot even walk properly, speak clearly or see very well. Every man’s life is in the hands of Allah, including those of presidents, governors, ministers and ordinary citizens. Allah knows those who will die soon and those who will live long.”

“So, how do we know when it is someone’s turn? Only Allah knows that. People are expressing fear about the President’s health because they have little faith. They know very little about the ways of Almighty Allah,” he said.

Akintola, who pointed out that sudden death among the young and healthy in the country was common, said, “Don’t we have Nigerians who have been sick for the past 40 years but are still alive and working? It is about management and one’s turn. It is about faith. Let’s stop the pessimism. Healthy people drop dead without explanations while people who are sick keep hanging on although we are expecting the worst.”

According to him, Buhari can only die at his apportioned time.

“He won’t live one minute longer than Allah gave him. But, mind you, neither will he die one minute earlier. No matter how many death wishes and death wish advertisements,” the Muslim scholar said.

He noted further that the President had lived a fulfilled life.

Conte: Strength of character

Conte: Strength of character
The fact today’s victory came against a side as good as Manchester City gave Antonio Conte extra satisfaction as the Blues made it eight wins in a row.

The boss saw his team come from behind at the break to eventually run out 3-1 winners at the Etihad, the goals scored by Diego Costa, Willian and Eden Hazard.

It keeps us at the top of the Premier League and extends our winning sequence into a third month…

‘It’s a big win and a big result against a really strong team,’ Conte told Chelsea TV afterwards.

‘With the quality of players in their squad I think it’s the most complete in this league. For this reason, I am pleased with the result, and with the players. They showed me great character.

‘We were lucky at the start of the second half because there was one crossbar, and also a good save from Thibaut kept the result at 1-0,’ Conte added.

‘Then we found great strength to score the goal to draw, and then to score the second goal and the third goal.

‘It’s fantastic this because I repeat, it’s not easy to come here and win this game. Now we have to continue.'

Conte isn’t ready to call us title contenders yet

‘We have to wait for the first part of the season because we know this league is not easy. Now we are playing very well. We are playing good football, we have good confidence, but it’s important to continue to work and improve. There is room to improve.’

Cesc Fabregas started his first game since September

‘I’m pleased for Cesc above all because this game wasn’t easy for him. The last game he played for Chelsea in the line-up was against Arsenal, and then he had an injury. He recovered and I’m very happy for his performance.

‘He must continue to improve. For me to have more options is good. It’s important to have the whole squad available.’

In the closing moments Manchester City had two players dismissed after a bad Sergio Aguero challenge

‘The final [stage] wasn’t good. I hope only Luiz is not injured after this tackle. It’s very difficult to explain this final part of the game. I support the referee. It is important that the referee whistles and we ‘finish’.

‘I’m happy because I always tell my players to be focused on the game on the pitch, and always to keep calm. It’s normal when you play these big games it’s not easy to keep calm in every single moment, but I’m pleased because all my players tried to keep calm.’

Niger Delta Avengers accuses Army troops of crude oil thefts

Niger Delta Avengers accuses Army troops of crude oil thefts

According to Militant group Niger Delta Avengers, they have video and pictorial evidence that show troops of the "Operation Delta Safe force", which was activated on June 24 with the mandate to stop all illegal oil bunkering activity, involvement in thefts. They also condemned security reports linking their militant forces to the killing of military troops. The statement read;

"The High Command of the  Niger Delta Avengers condemns the entire security reports linking our forces to the killing of military troops in Nembe Bayelsa state. NDA still wonders when this  charade and acts of desperation of the Nigeria military by always linking crimes in the southern part of Nigeria to our fighters will stop. It is a shame that Operations Delta Safe is still employing the old habits of deliberately dinning and wining with unaudited intelligence from political thugs, political paymasters and enemies of the Niger Delta to perpetuate their continuous funding and relevance by catching in on the hunger in the land. One question for the commander of Operation Delta Safe! Who are the people perpetuating the ongoing illegal oil bunkerings in the Niger Delta at the moment? Because we have both video and pictorial evidences of your troops serious involvement in the pervasive crude oil thefts.  We have records of how much profit you collect and make per day from these atrocities in the Niger Delta.

To set the records straight, we cannot come after your Dane guns and ammunitions. Since the start of " Operation Red Economy" our forces did not  fire one shot until we have achieved this great success of crippling crude oil productions in the Niger Delta to about 800,000 barrels per day. Those gangs members  paraded as killers of troops of ODS are well known followers of Mr Africa Ukparasai and Mr Timipre Silva, that were purposefully armed  by the APC during the governorship elections  of Bayelsa state...  If your forces and formations comes under attack by notorious elements of your own political collaborators and calculations you should  accept it as a friendly fire ( from your own dubious creations getting loosed and fighting back to protect their territories and bellies)  and enjoy it whilst it last! excuse the NDA from your " Pig and Mud squabbles"

Yesterday was Arepo in Ogun  state, today is Nembe in Bayelsa state where is the next state you want to involve the NDA in this your bread and butter security conspiracies and collaborations ? Please count us of your incapacities and blackmails. Is this not the Operation Delta Safe that is the puppet and child of necessity of some  jail Birds and political shenanigans like Charles Okah's MEND and RNDA?  We the NDA and Niger Delta People knows that you are not to here to protect anything in the region rather you have come to perpetuate more crude oil thefts that is worst. As such, we have  avoided everything that will justify your continuous stay and sour your illicit funds . Just a moment, in our reality checks, from  Operation Hakuri two, Operation Restore  Hope, Operation Pulo Shield  and today Operation Delta Safe your formations and troops have always being the merchants of illegal oil bunkering activities in our Niger Delta.  Your outfits in most cases deliberately trigger killings and kidnappings to make your services relevant.

Conclusively, we want to ask if it is best practices for heads of military formations in the Niger Delta to become super rich months after been deployment, acquiring properties locally/internationally? it is our wish that, one day governments of Nigeria can think right and redirect these huge  resources used to fund these your illicit and  infamous outfits to achieving especially some of the short term development frameworks in the Niger Delta to the de-escalation of the perennial traumas the people are passing throughout the region."

FBI interviews Hillary Clinton in private server probe

FBI interviews Clinton in email probe: campaign

X

By Emily Flitter | NEW YORK

(Reuters) - The Federal Bureau of Investigation interviewed Democratic U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for three and a half hours on Saturday as part of the probe into her use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state, her campaign said.

The interview at FBI headquarters in Washington followed a week of intense public focus on the investigation and on Clinton's viability as a presidential candidate, with four months to go to the election. Her campaign has tried for months to downplay the controversy as a distraction.

In an interview broadcast on MSNBC, Clinton said she was happy to do the FBI interview, which her spokesman earlier described as "voluntary."

"I've been answering questions for over a year" regarding the private email server, Clinton said.

It was not clear if the questioning of Clinton signaled an imminent conclusion to the investigation in a pivotal time for the presidential race. It does follow FBI interviews of several of Clinton's former staff members, as well as her top aide Huma Abedin.

Clinton is expected to be formally nominated as the Democratic candidate for the Nov. 8 presidential election at the party's convention in less than four weeks.

"Timing of FBI interview, between primaries and convention, probably good timing for @HillaryClinton," tweeted David Axelrod, a former senior adviser to President Barack Obama who served as the chief strategist for his two presidential campaigns. "Best to get it behind her."

Clinton is currently the front-runner for the White House with polls showing her leading presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

In a tweet on Saturday, Trump said it was "impossible for the FBI not to recommend criminal charges against Hillary Clinton. What she did was wrong!"

He also criticized Clinton's husband, former President Bill Clinton, for meeting privately with Attorney General Loretta Lynch earlier this week, which Lynch later said she regretted, though she said they did not discuss the investigation.

"What Bill did was stupid!" Trump tweeted.

The FBI is investigating whether anyone in Clinton's operation broke the law as result of a personal email server kept in her Chappaqua, New York, home while she was secretary of state from 2009 to 2013. One of the questions is whether they mishandled classified information on the server.

Clinton and her staff have struggled to respond to accusations that her use of the server in violation of State Department protocol means she is untrustworthy. Trump has said the investigation should disqualify her from being president.

Australia's election is too close to call and the final result may not be known for some time as counting continues in tightly run seats.

It is unclear if the ruling Liberal-National has won the 76 lower house seats it needs to form a ruling majority.

If it has not, it will need support from minor parties and independents to hold on to power.

The Labor Party will not gain enough seats to form government.

But it has improved strongly on its 2013 election result of 55 lower house seats, making particularly strong gains in Tasmania and New South Wales.

'Labor is back'

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten told party faithful at a function in Victoria that the close result was a vindication of Labor's policies.

"There is one thing for sure - the Labor Party is back," he said.

"Three years after the Liberals came to power in a landslide they have lost their mandate. And Mr Turnbull's economic program, such as it was, has been rejected by the people of Australia, whatever happens next week."

Labor was decimated at the 2013 election, when Tony Abbott led the party.

Postal and pre-poll votes are now being counted as a number of important seats go down to the wire.

More than 10 million people cast ballots on Saturday, on top of four million who voted early.

All 150 seats in Australia's lower house, the House of Representatives, are up for grabs at the election, as are 76 seats in Australia's upper house, the Senate.

Minor party success

Results so far suggest Australians voted in large numbers for independents and minor parties.

Senator Nick Xenophon has been pegged as a potential kingmaker after his newly formed political party took the lower house South Australian seat of Mayo, formerly a safe Liberal seat.

Mr Xenophon is expected to be returned to the Senate and his party may gain additional upper house seats, particularly in South Australia.

Pauline Hanson's One Nation party has polled strongly in Queensland and although it has not won a lower house seat, its preferences have tended to flow to the opposition Labor Party.

Ms Hanson, who gained notoriety for her anti-immigration views in the 1990s, told the Nine Network that, based on early results, she was likely to secure two spots in the Senate.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten's claims that the government intended to dismantle Australia's public health system, Medicare, was widely being credited with creating a late swing to Labor.

INTERVIEW: Amid progress in fighting cholera, UN official urges support to health-care system

1 July 2016 – While the incidence of cholera in Haiti has decreased by 90 per cent since an outbreak that began shortly after the devastating earthquake of 2010, more investment is needed in the country’s health-care system to fully eliminate the disease and address the country’s other health challenges, a top United Nations official today said.

“A lot of progress has been made in terms of controlling the disease,” said Marc Vincent, UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Representative for Haiti, in an interview with UN News Services. “But a lot more work needs to be done to eliminate it.”

“We’ve come a long way, but obviously we need a lot more investment, and it’s going to take more time to ensure that all Haitians – particularly Haitian children – have access to clean water and good sanitation facilities,” he continued, citing the need for “a huge and massive investment in the health-care system.”

Mr. Vincent noted that between $3.5 million and $4 million per year is needed to maintain the rapid response mechanism in Haiti, which consists of some 50 teams that are dispatched to every reported cholera case in the country. The teams help to sanitize the affected household, as well as work with family members to provide oral rehydration treatment and explain what needs to be done to avoid future transmission.

The representative highlighted that of the amount required for the response teams, $2 million is needed for the rest of this year, in order to ensure that the teams are in place during the critical rainy season at the end of the year. The response teams also help with issues such as Zika and other infectious diseases.

“With that mechanism, we’ve been able to bring down the number of people affected by cholera from a high of 350,000 in 2011 to just over 36,000 last year. So this rapid response mechanism really helps to control the disease,” he emphasized.

Indeed, as a result of efforts spearheaded by the UN and the Government of Haiti, by the first semester of 2014, the number of cholera cases had been reduced by 75 per cent and stood at 12,000. However, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of April this year, the number of cases stood at 24,108, including 378 deaths.

Underscoring that it is necessary to tackle all waterborne diseases – which are the second cause of infant mortality in Haiti – Mr. Vincent said that UNICEF and partners have been working on establishing cholera treatment centres in isolated areas throughout Haiti, while at the same time working with the Government to improve the country’s overall health-care system.

The UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) has partnered with Haitian Agencies to combat cholera by providing clean water. UN Photo/Logan Abassi

“Cholera treatment and the epidemic reflect the need to invest much more in the health-care system. It’s a lot like Ebola – you’ve seen the same number of people die from cholera since the beginning of the epidemic in Haiti as we saw in Ebola – but we need a huge and massive investment in the health-care system to really address the challenges that we face,” he said.

In addition to the efforts of the response teams to control the disease, UNICEF has also been working to increase access to clean water and sanitation facilities, as well as working with populations to reduce open defaecation, particularly in communes where cholera is known to be most persistent.

Through a campaign launched in late 2014 by the UN and the Prime Minister of Haiti, Mr. Vincent noted that a total of 31 communities have become open defaecation free, resulting in about 20,000 people making the transition.

Another challenge is reducing contamination to cholera in urban areas throughout Haiti, which include marketplaces and transportation hubs that become the centre from which the disease spreads to other parts of the country.

“What we would really like to do is invest in reducing the contamination in those areas, ensuring awareness as people transition through those areas, but also repairing the water systems in these urban areas to prevent further transmission,” Mr. Vincent said.

The representative estimates that about $5 million is needed in those urban areas between now and the end of next year in order to map out weaknesses in the water systems.

Noting that 100,000 children suffer from suspected cholera, and more than 750 have died from cholera since the beginning of the epidemic in Haiti, Mr. Vincent said that UNICEF has calculated that 28,000 school days have been lost since the beginning of the outbreak.

“In addition to the mortality figures, which are way too high already, there are also much greater impacts in terms of the families and the communities,” he said, adding that there is also a huge impact on both a family’s ability to survive in the absence of a parent or loss of a parent, as well as psychological impacts on children.

In terms of a longer sanitation campaign in Haiti, Mr. Vincent said that of a total of $45 million in required funds, about $20 million has been raised – leaving a shortfall of $25 million to continue working to eradicate the disease

1 July 2016 – Tens of thousands of children in northeast Nigeria will die of malnutrition this year unless they receive treatment soon, the United Nations today warned after reaching areas in the north-east of the country which had been cut off by Boko Haram violence.

“We estimate that there will be almost a quarter of a million children under five suffering from severe acute malnutrition in Borno this year,” said Jean Gough, Nigeria Representative of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

“Unless we reach these children with treatment, one in five of them will die. We cannot allow that to happen,” Ms. Gough added.

The Nigerian Government announced earlier this week that the conflict in north-eastern Nigeria has already displaced 2.4 million people and pushed food insecurity and malnutrition to emergency levels with more than half a million people requiring immediate food assistance.

The disruption of food production due to the violence, increased prices of basic commodities and given that the period also coincides with the initial months of the lean season, it is feared that the number of those in need of assistance will rise further.

UN agencies and partners are responding to the situation and providing health and nutrition, safe water, household and other relief support.

“Improving security has enabled humanitarians to access areas that were previously cut off. The conditions we are seeing there are devastating,” said the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Munir Safieldin.

“While the government and humanitarian organizations have stepped up relief assistance, the situation in these areas requires a much faster and wider response.”

On 27 June, UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) that supports rapid humanitarian responses, released $13 million to provide immediate life-saving food, nutrition and protection assistance to those in need in north-east Nigeria.

'It's all lies!' - Spain keeper De Gea denies forcing girl to have sex with teammates against her will

'It's all lies!' - Spain keeper De Gea denies forcing girl to have sex with teammates against her will

Spain and Man U goalkeeper David De Gea has vehemently denied the sexual assault allegations revealed by two top Spanish papers yesterday. On Friday, Spanish paper El Dario and El Confidencial reported that De Gea organised a sex orgy with a prostitute for teammates in which a woman was made to take part against her will.

According to the girl, who revealed in court papers in a trial against a child pornography kingpin popularly known in Spain as Torbe, De Gea forced her and another girl into sex with two Under-21 internationals (Muniain and Isco ) in 2012.

More reports emerging from the case reveal that the goalkeeper tried to arrange the girl, who is a prostitute, for five Manchester United players.
But De Gea, Spain's first choice goalkeeper ahead of Iker Casillas has denied knowledge of the allegations calling them 'all lies'

"I am the first one to be surprised by this report. I deny it, it is false and nothing more, it is a lie and false," de Gea told a press conference at Spain's Euro 2016 training base.
"It is false what is coming out in the press and it will be in the hands of my lawyers," he added.

The girl claims she was forced into prostitution and she was taken to a Madrid hotel and introduced to another girl and two footballers.

Once in a room with the other girl, the witness - known in police interview papers as TP3 - said that she was told by Torbe that she had to comply with the sexual demands of the two Under-21 internationals (Muniain and Isco).
When she said she did not wish to have such kind of sex, she claimed to police that Torbe "grabbed her forcefully by the arm".
The witness said she had told Torbe in front of the footballers that she did not want to take part in the sexual encounter.
El Diario, who broke the news, claimed the players said they did not want any recordings of the encounter to be made in case their playing careers were affected.

According to the girl, the whole encounter was arranged by David De Gea.
